CHIKWAWA, Malawi — A member of Parliament has distributed food aid to 3,000 households affected by El Nino-related weather patterns in southern Malawi, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Abida Sidik Mia, who represents Chikwawa Nkombezi constituency and serves as Water and Sanitation Minister, delivered the aid Friday to two villages in Senior Chief Ngabu's area.
"This is going to reduce hunger situation to the striken communities," Mia said.
The food distribution, part of the "Drought Disaster Rapid Response Programme," was assisted by the Muslim World League.
Doreen Jimu, a beneficiary, expressed gratitude for the initiative.
"What we have received today it is going to take us some days," she said, highlighting the severe food insecurity in the region.
Jimu warned that without further assistance, "people are going to die of hunger."
