MP Demands Police Chief Resign Amid Violent Demonstration Controversies
Leader of the House Richard Chimwendo Banda defended the government's position, emphasizing that the constitution allows for peaceful — not violent — demonstrations.
LILONGWE, Malawi— A Malawi parliamentarian called Tuesday for the resignation of Inspector General of Police Merlyne Yolamu, criticizing her handling of recent demonstrations, writes Ireen Kayira.
Machinga South East Member of Parliament Esther Jolobala accused the police leadership of failing to maintain public safety during protests, specifically highlighting incidents involving individuals wielding panga knives.
"If the subordinates of the Inspector General are failing to do their work and are being aided by other people with Panga knives, it means that the police have failed," Jolobala said during parliamentary discussions.
Jolobala, who previously supported Yolamu's nomination — noting she was breaking a long-standing male-dominated leadership pattern — expressed disappointment in the current police response to demonstrations.
Opposition Leader George Chaponda further criticized the police, asserting that constitutional rights to peaceful demonstration are being eroded.
He referenced a November 13 incident where civil society organizations' demonstration was allegedly disrupted by individuals with weapons.
Leader of the House Richard Chimwendo Banda defended the government's position, emphasizing that the constitution allows for peaceful — not violent — demonstrations.
He distinguished between legitimate protest and actions involving property protection.
The controversy highlights ongoing tensions between law enforcement, political opposition, and civil society in Malawi, with concerns mounting over public safety and the right to peaceful assembly.
Key points of contention include:
- Alleged police inaction during violent incidents
- Constitutional rights to demonstration
- Safety of public protests
- Leadership effectiveness of the police inspector general
The call for Yolamu's resignation represents a significant political challenge to current law enforcement leadership.
