MP Calls for Naming Road After Late Minister Moses Dossi
The differing views on the road's naming highlight the complex process of honoring historical figures while addressing the practical needs of local communities.
CHIKWAWA, Malawi- Mwanza West Member of Parliament Joyce Chitsulo has called on the government to name the Chapananga Road in Chikwawa after the late former Sports Minister Moses Dossi, in recognition of his contributions to the area's development, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Chitsulo made the appeal on Saturday during Dossi's funeral ceremony at Chapananga Ground in the district.
She cited Dossi's role in the construction of Chapananga Secondary School and bringing electricity to the area as some of his notable achievements.
"The late Dossi contributed immensely to the development of Chikwawa West, where he served as a Member of Parliament. It is only fitting to remember him by naming this road the Moses Dossi Highway," Chitsulo said.
However, her proposal contradicts President Lazarus Chakwera's earlier announcement during the State of the National Address (SONA) to name the road after the late Sidik Mia, honouring the political giant from the Shire Valley districts.
Chakwera had stated that the Chikwawa-Chapananga and Thabwa-Fatima roads would be renamed the Sidik Mia and Chakuamba Highways, respectively, in honor of the two prominent politicians.
Agnes Sabao, a resident of Traditional Authority Chapananga, expressed confusion over the conflicting proposals for renaming the same road.
She emphasized that the communities primarily desire a good road network that remains accessible throughout the year.
"People are tired of just renaming the road instead of rehabilitating it and the Chapananga Bridge," Sabao said.
The differing views on the road's naming highlight the complex process of honoring historical figures while addressing the practical needs of local communities.
