The minister may also discuss Mozambique's growing mining sector, particularly its graphite production for electric vehicle batteries.
CAPE TOWN, South Africa — Mozambique's Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Carlos Joaquim Zacarias, will discuss the country's major gas projects at the upcoming African Energy Week conference in Cape Town, writes Winston Mwale.
Mozambique, home to significant gas reserves in the Rovuma Basin, has attracted investments from international oil companies, including TotalEnergies, ExxonMobil, and Eni.
Eni's Coral South Floating LNG project began production in late 2022, marking Mozambique's entry into LNG exports. A second facility, Coral Norte, is now underway.
TotalEnergies' 13 million tons per annum (MTPA) Mozambique LNG project, the country's first onshore LNG development, aims to resume construction this year following security-related delays.
ExxonMobil's 18 MTPA Rovuma LNG project remains in the pre-final investment decision phase but has made recent progress.
Zacarias is expected to address Mozambique's potential as a major LNG supplier to Asian and European markets, as well as the country's role in energy transition and security.
The minister may also discuss Mozambique's growing mining sector, particularly its graphite production for electric vehicle batteries.
NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber, said Mozambique's energy potential is "transforming not only its economy but also contributing to energy security and growth across the continent."
