Moyale Barracks Defeats Silver Strikers in Penalty Shootout Battle
Moyale Barracks emerged victorious in the intense shootout, winning 10-9 on penalties, much to the delight of their coach, Nicholas Mhango.
MZUZU, MALAWI — In a thrilling match at Mzuzu Stadium, Moyale Barracks triumphed over Silver Strikers in the FDH Bank Cup round of 16 on Sunday, July 23, 2023, writes Happy Valirani.
The game started with an early goal from the Silver Strikers' Mark Fodya in the 62nd minute. However, Moyale Barracks responded swiftly, with Gasten Simkonda equalising the scoreline at 1-1 in the 75th minute.
Despite attempts from both teams to secure a winning goal, the match concluded with a draw after 90 minutes of regulation time.
This led to a penalty shootout to determine the winner and the team that would progress to the quarterfinals of the FDH Bank Cup.
During the shootout, Stain Davie missed his penalty for Moyale Barracks, shooting the ball over the bar.
On the other hand, Silver Strikers' Tandenda Balaka failed to convert his penalty as Moyale Barracks' goalkeeper, McDonald Harawa, saved the shot. Gasten Simkonda also saw his penalty saved by Charles Thom, the Silver Strikers' goalkeeper.

Mhango expressed his gratitude to the supporters, stating, "It's a reward to my supporters, and I know that they are happy. We struggled in the first half, but we managed to equalize quickly in the second half. We were confident in our penalty-taking skills and aimed to win the game. We look forward to upcoming matches."
On the other hand, the Silver Strikers' coach, Pieter De Jong, described the game as difficult and cited the pitch conditions as a major challenge.
De Jong expressed his disappointment, saying, "It was a difficult game because it's almost impossible to play football on this pitch, as it is very bumpy. We scored first, but our opponents levelled the scoreline, and ultimately, we lost in the penalties."
The victory for Moyale Barracks advances them to the next stage of the FDH Bank Cup, as they continue their quest for the championship title.
