MOYALE BARRACKS CLINCH NORTH FAM WOMEN'S TITLE
Moyale Barracks' triumph means they have qualified for the national phase.
MZUZU, Malawi- With two games left in the season, Moyale Barracks have won this year's Northern Region Fam Women Football League after beating Bico Optical 9-1 on Saturday in a match played at Chibavi ground, writes Victor Musongole.
Chipo Ngwenya scored seven goals while Ireen Albert and Ruth Gama added two more to seal the victory for Moyale Barracks, who won the league two seasons ago and are topping the standings with 31 points from 12 games.
No other team can catch them with just two matches remaining.
"We are thrilled we have finally won the league," said Bridget Mwale, assistant coach for Moyale Barracks.
"We told our players that crucial games are played in the first round, so we made sure we won them all because we knew most teams come on strong in the second round."
Mwale said the team struggled at times but persevered to claim the title and earn a spot in the national tournament, where they hope to improve on past performances.
Sports reporter Chifundo Zingunde said there has been noticeable improvement among most teams, showing progress for the league overall.
"The teams have stronger and more balanced squads, which has highly contributed to the change in the league," Zingunde said.
"We should also credit the coaches - with recent coaching courses, I think we're seeing the impact."
Moyale Barracks' triumph means they have qualified for the national phase.
They last won the league in 2020 and finished as runners-up last season.
