Moyale Barracks Captain Retires After Decorated Career
The retirements come as Moyale Barracks began preparations for the 2024 season on Monday.
MZUZU, Malawi- Moyale Barracks football club captain Gastin Simkonda announced his retirement from active football on Monday after a decorated career with the Malawi Defense Force Premier Division side, writes Victor Musongole.
Simkonda, 35, finished as the team's top goal scorer with 9 goals this past season and won the league's Golden Boot award in 2014 with 17 goals.
He also finished as the league's runner up for the Golden Boot award several times over his career.
“I’ve decided to hang up my boots and retire from active football,” Simkonda said in a statement.
“It has been an honor to captain this great club.”
Simkonda joined Moyale Barracks in 2006 and made over 200 appearances, scoring over 100 goals.
The striker won three league titles with Moyale Barracks in 2009, 2011 and 2013.
Moyale Barracks also announced the retirement of goalkeeper Macdonald Harawa, who appeared in over 150 matches for the club.
Harawa will join the club's technical staff as the new goalkeeper's coach.
