Mixed Reactions from Analysts as SULOM President Fleetwood Haiya Announces Candidacy for FAM Presidency
The Football Association of Malawi has set the Elective General Assembly for December 16, 2023, in Mzuzu.
LILONGWE, Malawi — The announcement of Fleetwood Haiya, current President of the Super League of Malawi (SULOM), as a candidate for the presidency of the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has sparked diverse reactions from sports analysts, writes Romeo Umali.
Haiya unveiled his intentions at a press briefing held in Mzuzu's Grand Palace Hotel on Sunday, citing pressure from already-nominated affiliates and a shared vision to elevate Malawian football.
While some analysts praise Haiya's track record and commitment, others criticise the move, given the short duration of his current term as SULOM president.
Parry Chinyama, a sports analyst, expressed disappointment over Haiya's decision to run for FAM president, considering that he has not even completed a year in his current office.
Chinyama believes this action is a betrayal of the affiliates who elected Haiya for a four-year term and questions the fairness of the move.
In contrast, Kondi Msungama, a former football administrator, sees Haiya's candidature as a positive development.
He commends Haiya's track record as an administrator and his contributions to SULOM, suggesting that this experience makes him a strong candidate for FAM president.
Dan Chemis, another sports analyst, views Haiya's bid as a healthy development for Malawian football.
He anticipates a smooth transition of leadership should Haiya win the FAM presidency, with Gilbert Mitawa, his vice president at SULOM, stepping into his shoes.
The Football Association of Malawi has set the Elective General Assembly for December 16, 2023, in Mzuzu.
