Mitawa to Remain Sulom President Until Elections
The postponement of the elections follows the reshuffling of key positions at Sulom in December 2023, which marked a significant change in Malawian football leadership.
LILONGWE, Malawi - The Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has decided to postpone elections for the vacant positions of president and committee member, writes Alinafe Nyanda.
Delegates at the Sulom annual general meeting on Saturday voted to hold an extraordinary general meeting to fill the positions.
The vacancies arose after the current Football Association President, Fleetwood Haiya, and Daud Mtanthiko previously held the Sulom president and committee member positions, respectively.
Colonel Gilbert Mitawa, the acting Sulom president, will continue to lead the organization until the elections.
He described the meeting's discussions as "productive and fruitful."
"I sincerely thank all delegates," Mitawa said.
"There was no expectation to confirm me as Sulom President ... My primary objective is to ensure we operate within the law."
Mitawa explained that some teams proposed delaying the elections, but the resolution to hold them was ultimately passed.
This decision was praised by Mighty Mukuru Wanderers general secretary David Kanyenda, who cited the Sulom constitution's provisions.
Sports analyst Julius Mithi emphasized the importance of following proper procedures and providing adequate notice to teams before holding elections.
