Misewu Folo police unit to open next month, says MP Mia
The police unit comes after appeals from residents for Mia to build a facility to reduce crime in the area.
CHIKWAWA, Malawi - The highly anticipated Misewu Folo Police Unit in Chikwawa Nkombedzi Constituency will open in February 2024, according to Member of Parliament Abida Sidik Mia, writes Moses Thole.
"I will hand over the police unit in February this year. Everything is in place," Mia said.
The facility will help improve security in Misewu Folo and surrounding areas, Mia said, as currently the only reliable police presence is the Ngabu Police Post.
Residents must travel long distances to reach the Ngabu unit, which can be difficult during odd hours, according to Dickson Matemba, Chikwawa District police spokesperson.
The Misewu Folo Police Unit was constructed using funds from the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).
It is located along the M1 Road, just a few meters from the Misewu Folo Trading Center.
Khofat Malunga, councilor for the Alumenda Ward where the facility is located, said he expects crime rates in the nearby Illovo Sugar Estate to decline once the unit opens.
"Some irresponsible community members go to Illovo offices and steal different materials, sugar cane, which I feel will be dealt with when the Misewu Folo Police Unit is operational," Malunga said.
