MISA Malawi Condemns Threats Against Journalists at DPP Convention
Democratic Progressive Party public relations officer Shadreck Namalomba has condemned the incident, calling it regrettable.
LILONGWE, Malawi - The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Malawi has strongly condemned threats made against journalists from Nation Publications Limited (NPL) by suspected supporters of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) during the party's national convention, writes Wendi Mkandawire.
In a statement released Monday, MISA Malawi Chairperson Golden Matonga said that in the early hours of the convention at COMESA Hall, individuals claiming to be part of the "DPP media team" forced NPL journalists to delete a Facebook news update about the event.
"The NPL team had to seek special protection from some party officials to safely move themselves and their livestreaming gadgets out of the convention hall," Matonga said.
MISA Malawi has called on the DPP to reprimand those involved and ensure the safety of journalists covering future events.
Democratic Progressive Party public relations officer Shadreck Namalomba has condemned the incident, calling it regrettable.
However, he also advised the media team to be professional in their reporting and photography, adding that "media should respect women when taking photos because these are our mothers, they should stick to the purpose of the event, we don't take photos of women when they are sleeping."
