CHIRADZULU, Malawi — Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, Liana Kankhobwe Chapota, has affirmed her ministry's unwavering commitment to assist the country's water boards in enhancing water services for the public, writes Elita Nkalo.
Her declaration came during a visit to the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) Compass in Chiradzulu, where she commended the Southern Region Water Board (SRWB) for a vital water project aimed at supplying clean and affordable water to the MUST community.
Chapota emphasized the timeliness of the project, aligning with the government's focus on achieving Sustainable Development Goal number 6, which targets universal and equitable access to clean water for all by 2030.
"This project is a significant achievement for us and reflects the country's progress towards ensuring access to clean water for every citizen," Chapota stated.
She also pledged her ministry's dedication to investment and advocacy, seeking additional resources from various partners and the national budget to ensure widespread access to clean water.
Brown Mpinganjira, the board chairperson for the Southern Region Water Board (SRWB), provided insight into the project's impact.
He revealed that, through the project, the board currently produces over 2.5 million litres of water daily.
A substantial portion of this supply, 700 thousand litres, is allocated for MUST's daily consumption.
"We are confident that, through our ongoing investments, we will continue to meet the water needs of the MUST population," Mpinganjira stated.
Dr. Wilfred Kadewa, representing the Vice Chancellor of MUST, highlighted the positive developments in their water supply.
Despite a growing student population, he noted that their water supply had become more stable compared to previous years, thanks to the project.
The Deputy Minister's visit underscored the government's commitment to enhancing water services and achieving universal access to clean water, aligning with international development goals.
