CHIKWAWA, Malawi—The Ministry of Tourism, through the Department of National Parks and Wildlife, held a joint commemoration event on June 5, 2023, for three important natural resource conservation areas: World Wetlands, World Wildlife, and World Rangers Day, writes Comfort Bulangete.
The event took place at Mitole PMF Ground in Chikwawa District.
The day began with a solidarity match from Chikwawa District Council to Mitole PMF ground, with notable figures such as Minister of Tourism Vera Kamtukule, South East Police Commissioner Chikondi Chingadza, and District Commissioner for Chikwawa District Council Mr. Nardin Kamba joining the match.
The Minister of Tourism, Vera Kamtukule, will grace the occasion as the guest of honour, under the theme "Partnerships for Conservation and Restoration."
The Ministry, in collaboration with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife, chose to combine the celebrations due to financial limitations.
The event aims to provide a platform for sharing experiences, knowledge, and mutual learning in the areas of biodiversity, environment, natural resources, and wetland management, while also highlighting the challenges faced by rangers in their duties.
Minister Vera Kamtukule urged all Malawians to join hands in conserving the environment and wildlife for future generations, emphasising that wildlife animals serve as a source of foreign exchange and contribute to the nation's development.
Senior Chief Chapananga concurred with the Minister, emphasising that it is everyone's responsibility to take care of the environment for the country's development.
World Wetlands Day is internationally celebrated on February 2 each year, aiming to raise awareness about the vital role of wetlands for people and our planet while conserving them.
International World Wildlife Day is celebrated on March 3 each year, with the goal of celebrating the diverse and beautiful forms of wildlife and raising awareness of the benefits that the conservation of fauna and flora provides to people.
World Rangers Day, observed on July 31 each year, commemorates and honours rangers who have been killed or injured in the line of duty and celebrates the important work rangers do.
This year's commemoration carries the theme "Partnerships for Conservation and Restoration," emphasising the need for collaborative efforts in protecting and restoring natural resources.
