Ministry of Energy, World Bank Sign $20M Off-Grid Fund

BLANTYRE, Malawi - The Malawi Ministry of Energy and the World Bank signed a $20 million off-grid market development fund known as the Ngwee Ngwee Ngwee Fund on Thursday, writes Mayamiko Phiri.
The World Bank-funded project aims to electrify about 200,000 homes across Malawi, excluding the country's four cities and the district of Likoma, according to Engineer Alfonso Chikuni, principal secretary in the Ministry of Energy.
"This initiative will rapidly increase access to cleaner energy in rural communities, poor urban areas, and remote places far from the grid," Chikuni said in remarks at the signing ceremony in Blantyre.
The five off-grid companies awarded loans and grants to implement the project are Green Impact Technologies Ltd., Zuwa Energy (Pvt) Ltd., Star Media, Perennial Holdings Ltd. (Yellow Solar) and Vitalite Group Ltd.
