Minister Urges Elevated Chiefs in Dowa District to Combat Corruption for Development

Dowa, Malawi-The Minister of Local Government, Unity, and Culture, Richard Chimwendo Banda, has delivered a strong message to the newly elevated chiefs in Dowa district, urging them to steer clear of corruption as it hampers the development of the region, writes Philord Magalasi.
Banda emphasised that the government needs chiefs who are dedicated to promoting development and prioritising the well-being of the people over personal interests.
During the elevation ceremony of T/A Chakhaza to Senior Chief Chakhaza and SB T/A Mulalo to Traditional Authority Mulalo, held separately in their respective headquarters on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, Minister Banda stressed the importance of chiefs in advancing development in their areas.
He called upon the newly elevated chiefs to be inclusive, accommodating everyone irrespective of their political affiliation.
Banda highlighted the significance of fostering harmony and unity among the people in their regions.
Mayamiko Kambewa, Chairperson for Dowa District Council, welcomed the elevation of the Chiefs, expressing optimism that it would expedite development in the district.
Kambewa also urged the newly elevated chiefs to take a leading role in initiating and promoting development, emphasising that government efforts alone may not suffice without the active participation of chiefs.
In response to the call to be inclusive, Traditional Authority Mulalo, one of the newly elevated chiefs, pledged to work with individuals in his area, regardless of their political affiliation or religion.
He emphasised the importance of coordination to achieve development goals.
The ceremonies celebrating the elevation of these chiefs were enlivened with various traditional activities, underscoring the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the Dowa district.
