Minister Urges Broadcasters to Spread Hope
The two-day conference concluding Tuesday has drawn broadcasters from radio, television and digital media outlets across the country.
LILONGWE, Malawi — Information Minister Moses Kunkuyu urged Malawian broadcasters on Monday to focus their messaging on spreading hope rather than negativity, writes Moses Nyirenda.
Kunkuyu made the appeal in a speech opening the annual broadcasters’ conference hosted by the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) in Lilongwe.
This year’s conference theme is “Shaping the Future of Broadcasting Through Digital Technologies.”
“You should produce messages that are giving hope to Malawians, like we are talking today people are accessing free Maize, people are now accessing the social cash transfers, we now have budgetary support coming in, all these positive strides you should inform the public about them,” Kunkuyu said.
He advised broadcasters to get creative in developing locally produced content that can compete globally.
“We have to make sure that the content that we are producing is of the standards that can compete globally, the content which is being produced in Malawi is being consumed for Free,” he said.
Kunkuyu said the government appreciates broadcasters’ role and is committed to supporting the industry’s growth.
MACRA Director General Daud Suleman echoed the government’s commitment to developing Malawi’s broadcasting landscape.
“We would like to shape this industry so that we build on one another so that as broadcasters are executing their work from regulatory perspective we should ensure that there is growth and protection,” Suleman said.
