CHITIPA, Malawi — Minister of Youth and Sports, Uchizi Mkandawire says it’s the Ministry’s responsibility to make sure that resources are available for the elevation of sports in the country, writes Patricia Kayuni.
He was saying this on Friday in Chitipa district as he toured the stalling Governance to Enable Service Delivery (GESD) funded Chitipa stadium in order to appreciate the progress.
He said, as a Ministry, they are aware of the problems that the district’s team Chitipa United is facing especially as they have to travel a long distance to play their home games because the stadium is still not completed.
He said he would engage the Ministry of Local Government to make available the K491 million GESD money so that the construction work resume and finish before the start of next season.

In his remarks, team manager for Chitipa United, Watson Kabaghe said Chitipa United is the only team that travels over 100kms to play home games at Karonga stadium.
He pleaded for help from the Ministry of Youth and Sports because he believes that when the stadium is open, travel costs will be reduced thereby allowing the team to improve the welfare of its players.
Meanwhile, District Commissioner for Chitipa Macmillan Magomero has promised that with funds from GESD, the council will build a strong stadium to fit the FIFA standard believing that it will therefore be able to accommodate even international games.
He has since thanked members of Parliament, Councilors and chiefs in the district for allowing them to use the whole amount from GESD for the project.
