Minister of Education Hands Over Vehicles, Motorcycles to MERP Desk Officers
Minister of Education, Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima, provides vehicles and motorcycles to MERP Desk Officers for improved monitoring under education reform program.
LILONGWE, MALAWI - The Minister of Education, Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima, handed over 10 vehicles and 76 motorcycles on Wednesday to MERP Desk Officers as part of the Malawi Education Reform Programme (MERP), writes Judgement Katika.
The vehicles and motorcycles will aid in monitoring various projects under the programme.
According to Wirima, the distribution of vehicles and motorcycles to district councils will address mobility challenges faced by MERP Desk Officers.
This will enable effective monitoring of ongoing projects, including the construction of 10,900 classroom blocks.
Wirima stressed the importance of the MERP programme in achieving quality education and human capital development, as outlined in the Malawi 2063 vision.
As part of the programme, 3,500 auxiliary teachers have already been recruited, with plans to recruit over 2,000 girls through an upcoming NGO initiative.
These girls will serve as mentors to female learners in remote schools where female teachers are lacking.
In addition to the recruitment efforts, MERP has also made significant infrastructure improvements.
One thousand latrines have been constructed across the country, and School Improvement Grants (PSIG) are being disbursed to primary schools.
The handover ceremony was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Education, district councils, and MERP implementing partners.
The provision of vehicles and motorcycles aims to enhance monitoring capabilities and ensure the successful implementation of the education reform programme.
