Minister Mtambo appoints September 5, 2022, as Peace and Unity Act implementation rollout date

Malawi: Timothy Mtambo, Minister of National Unity, has set September 5, 2022, as the start date for the implementation of the Peace and Unity Act (2022), writes Watipaso Mzungu.
Mtambo made the announcement on Tuesday at the agreement signing ceremony for amicable conflict resolution at Lusa Estate 69.
After Parliament passed the Peace and Unity Act (2022), President Dr Lazarus Chakwera signed it in May 2022.
Mtambo stated that the Peace and Unity Act is a watershed moment in Malawi's history in terms of peace and unity.
"Among other things, the law provides for the establishment of the Malawi Peace and Unity Commission and District Peace and Unity Committees, which will constitute Malawi's national peace architecture in collaboration with other relevant government and civil society organisations," he said.
Mtambo stated that his ministry is working with the rest of the country to put these structures in place by December 2022.
He added that his ministry will issue a call for nominations of names for President Chakwera's appointment as commissioners in the coming weeks.
Mtambo thanked the United Development Programme (UNDP) for previous assistance as well as funding earmarked for the establishment of the Malawi Peace and Unity Commission and District Peace and Unity Committees.
