Mike Kafalachi defeats Robert Chavi to become Nsanje District Council Chairperson, promises fair allocation of Governance to Enable Service Delivery (GESD) projects.
NSANJE, MALAWI — In a closely contested election, Mike Kafalachi, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chekerere Ward Councillor, has been elected as the new Nsanje District Council Chairperson, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Kafalachi secured 10 votes against 5 votes for the newly defected Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Matundu Ward Councillor, Robert Chavi.
Expressing gratitude for the trust placed in him, Kafalachi vowed to ensure that projects under the Governance to Enable Service Delivery (GESD) programme are distributed equitably across the district.
He emphasised the importance of utilising GESD resources to benefit the people of Nsanje.
Kafalachi also commended the outgoing chairperson, Rose Makiyi, for the district's improved ranking in the Local Authority Performance Assessment (LAPA) for the past two years.
In the race for Vice Chairperson, Felix Round, an Independent Councillor for Nyachilenda Ward, emerged victorious with 14 votes, defeating Nsanje Central MCP Chigumukire Ward Councillor Honest Sande, who received only 1 vote.
Sande expressed disappointment in his party members for not supporting him, despite MCP's numerical advantage.
Both Chavi and Sande, the defeated candidates, have graciously accepted the outcome and pledged to collaborate in the development of Nsanje.
Before proceeding with the election, Council Members observed a minute of silence to honour the late Senior Chief Malemia, who passed away on August 15, 2023, and was laid to rest on August 19, 2023.
