BLANTYRE, Malawi - Mighty Mukuru Wanderers continued their impressive start to the 2024 TNM Super League season with a 3-0 triumph over newly promoted Creck Sporting Club on Saturday at Kamuzu Stadium, writes Happy Valirani.
The win propelled Wanderers to the top of the league standings with seven points from three matches, one point clear of second-placed Silver Strikers.
It was Creck Sporting Club's first defeat of the campaign, having won their opening two games.
Wanderers, buoyed by a 3-0 away victory against FOMO FC in their previous outing, seized the initiative early on.
Stanley Sanudi opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 17th minute after defender Aaron Chilipa had fouled Timothy Silwimba inside the box.
Christopher Kumwembe doubled the hosts' advantage in the 36th minute, heading home a corner kick from Sanudi as Wanderers took a comfortable 2-0 lead into the break.
Creck Sporting Club sought a response in the second half, but their efforts proved futile against a resolute Wanderers defense.
Gadie Chirwa sealed the victory for the home side in the 88th minute, making the final score 3-0.
Wanderers' Wisdom Mpinganjira was named man of the match for his impressive performance.
"Congratulations to the boys, we have collected the maximum three points," said Meck Mwase, assistant coach of Mighty Mukuru Wanderers.
"We were very conscious considering that we were playing with a team that was coming from back-to-back wins."
Creck Sporting Club's coach, McDonald Mtetemera, acknowledged his team's shortcomings, saying, "We didn't play our game. It's very unfortunate that we have lost, but we will go back and correct where we went wrong. We have to accept that today wasn't our day; we congratulate our opponents."
