Mighty Mukuru Wanderers Extend Lead in TNM Super League with Convincing Win
Mighty Mukuru Wanderers' victory has solidified their position at the top of the TNM Super League.
Blantyre, Malawi - Mighty Mukuru Wanderers widened the gap at the top of the 2023 TNM Super League standings with a commanding 3-0 victory over relegation-threatened Extreme FC in a Sunday clash at Blantyre's Kamuzu Stadium on October 1, 2023, writes Happy Valirani.
The Wanderers' performance was highlighted by two goals from Lawrence Chaziya in the 53rd and 85th minutes, and a goal from Francis Mkonda in the 93rd minute, all scored in the second half of the match.
These goals secured all three points for the Wanderers and solidified their lead in the league.
With this win, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers have accumulated 46 points, creating a four-point lead at the top of the league table.
Chitipa United, in second place, has managed to collect 42 points, while Bullets, in third place, has 40 points, having played four games less than the Wanderers and Chitipa.
Mark Harrison, the head coach of Mighty Mukuru Wanderers, expressed his satisfaction with the three points but noted that his team missed several opportunities that could have resulted in more goals.
He commented, "We played well and dominated the game for the entire 90 minutes. We created many chances that could have resulted in six or seven goals, but we managed to score only three. In the first half, we missed two clear opportunities with only the goalkeeper to beat. I am happy with the three points, and now our focus is on the remaining games."
On the other side, Extreme FC remains at the bottom of the league table with 14 points and faces a daunting task to climb out of the relegation zone.
They are hoping for better fortunes in their remaining six games to maintain their spot in the Super League.
Elvis Kafoteka, the assistant coach of Extreme FC, attributed the team's loss to a lack of concentration, especially in the second half.
He acknowledged that his team is still fighting despite the slim chances of remaining in the Super League.
Kafoteka stated, "We lost concentration in the second half. We managed to contain Wanderers in the first half, but in the second half, we relaxed a bit, and we conceded three goals, all from set pieces. We have to congratulate our opponents for capitalizing on the chances they created. We are still fighting until we finish the remaining six games, and that's when we'll determine if we can stay in the Super League or not."
Mighty Mukuru Wanderers' victory has solidified their position at the top of the TNM Super League, while Extreme FC faces an uphill battle to avoid relegation as they enter the final stretch of the season.
