The goal extravaganza began with Chiukepo Msowoya's stunning opening goal for Wanderers just ten minutes into the match, setting the tone for a relentless performance.
LILONGWE, Malawi- In a remarkable display of prowess, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers secured a resounding 10-1 victory over Katete Rangers in the round of 64 of the 2023 Castel Challenge Cup, affectionately known as "Ibongetse", writes Happy Valirani.
The goal extravaganza began with Chiukepo Msowoya's stunning opening goal for Wanderers just ten minutes into the match, setting the tone for a relentless performance.
Msowoya continued his goal-scoring spree, netting three more goals throughout the match.
Francisco Madinga and Isaac Kaliati joined the scoring spree, each contributing with two goals, while Misheck Botoman and Robin Ngalande added one goal each to the tally.
Despite the overwhelming performance by Wanderers, Madalitso Mwachumu managed to salvage some pride for the Larangwe-based Katete Rangers by scoring a consolation goal.
Mark Harrison, head coach of Mighty Mukuru Wanderers, expressed his delight with his team's outstanding performance, considering the match part of their training regimen.
"It was part of the training for us. We scored three goals in the first ten minutes, and then the game was over. I am very impressed with the performance of some of the players who are not regulars in the first eleven of the team. We featured them today, and they have really performed well. We are looking forward to other games ahead," said Harrison.
Meanwhile, Mario Gadaga, the coach of Katete Rangers, graciously accepted the defeat, citing a lack of experience among his players.
However, Gadaga highlighted the positive aspect of the competition, emphasizing its potential to unearth hidden talents and motivate younger players.
"We played a good game; we have good players in Blantyre rural. They just need enough time for us coaches to groom them up. We knew that we couldn't beat Wanderers, but scoring one goal against them was a big achievement. We are the champions of Blantyre Rural, and reaching this far is a real accomplishment. We appreciate FAM and Castel Company for incorporating district teams in this Cup. This will help unearth raw talent," commented Gadaga.
The 2023 Castel Challenge Cup, launched on June 17th, 2023, at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, featured teams from various districts competing for national-level recognition.
