MHEN Trains Mother Care Teams on Vaccine Awareness
MHEN is implementing the Health Systems and Immunisation Strengthening project, aimed at ensuring all eligible children are reached for immunization.
MZIMBA, Malawi— The Malawi Health Equity Network (MHEN) has trained 12 mother care groups in Mzimba to lead vaccination awareness activities, writes James Nyirenda.
Speaking at Mathandani Health Post, Florence Khonyongwa, Monitoring and Evaluation officer for MHEN, said the training will help care groups urge families resistant to vaccines to change their mindset and allow children under five to access various vaccines.
"We are here to monitor what mother care groups have done since their establishment in 2019," Khonyongwa said.
"They are receiving refresher training on community vaccination and health care delivery."
Charles Chingwalu, an MHEN board member, expressed satisfaction with the two-day training's outcome.
"The reports we receive at a high level reflect exactly what's happening on the ground," he said.
"Mother care groups are there, we have evidence, the documents are available, and for this, I am very impressed."
Caroline Thole, chairperson for Mathandani Mother Care Group in Traditional Authority Kampingo Sibande's area, said the project has helped reduce cases of diseases like cholera and chickenpox.
However, she noted that women face mobility challenges while conducting their duties.
