Media crucial for social protection programs, ministry says

LILONGWE, Malawi— The Ministry of Gender emphasized the media's vital role in the success of Social Protection Programs (SPPs) nationwide, highlighting its importance in giving voice to the vulnerable and promoting transparency, writes Bridgette Mwanoka.
Chief Social Welfare Officer Chifundo Nanchukwa addressed reporters and editors Tuesday during an orientation on Social Protection for Gender Empowerment and Resilience (GEAR).
"The media is a crucial stakeholder in the development of our country," Nanchukwa said.
"A strong partnership between the government and the media is necessary to ensure the effective implementation of Social Protection Programs."
Nanchukwa expressed concern over myths surrounding SPPs, stressing the need for public awareness.
While acknowledging challenges, she emphasized the programs' significant contributions to long-term national goals.
Current SPPs include Social Cash Transfer, Climate Smart Enhanced Public Works Programme and School Meals Programs, aimed at improving life quality for those affected by poverty and hunger.
