Media Council of Malawi Tours North to Promote Standards Compliance
Media Council tours northern region to educate on role, standards.
MZUZU, Malawi - The Media Council of Malawi is touring media houses and practitioners in the northern region to educate them on the council's role and the standards they must adhere to, writes Tionge Hara.
The council is urging the media to remain professional and avoid misconduct.
This is according to Executive Director Moses Kaufa. He says the council has set standards that all media houses and journalists should comply with.
The council is currently at the Voice of Livingstonia radio station, providing an overview of how the council operates.
Kaufa said it is unfortunate that Voice of Livingstonia is not a member of the council, urging them to join.
The Media Council of Malawi was established in 1998 to promote and enhance media professionalism, freedom, and independence.
As part of its mandate, the council monitors and evaluates media performance, investigates complaints, and resolves disputes.
It also educates and promotes public awareness about the role of free and responsible media.
The northern region tour aims to ensure all media houses and practitioners understand and adhere to the council's standards.
This will help improve the quality, credibility, and responsibility of Malawi's media for the benefit of the public.
Membership in the council is also important, as it provides members with a forum to discuss challenges and opportunities within the industry.
It also entitles members to benefits like training and access to industry information.
By promoting compliance with its standards and expanding membership, the Media Council of Malawi seeks to strengthen the media sector, foster greater professionalism, and build trust with the public the media serves.
With collaboration from media houses and journalists, the council can further advance its mandate of promoting press freedom and excellence in Malawi.
