LILONGWE, Malawi - The Media Council of Malawi has issued a statement urging journalists and media organizations to uphold the principles of integrity and independence as the country prepares for the 2025 general elections, writes Winston Mwale.
In its New Year's address, the self-regulatory body emphasized the crucial role of journalists as "guardians of truth" and highlighted the importance of professionalism, accuracy, and fairness in political coverage.
The Media Council stressed the significance of journalists in fostering an informed society and shaping public discourse.
It called on the media to collectively promote strict professional standards during the upcoming election year.
By upholding integrity, impartiality, and fact-based reporting, journalists can contribute to the democratic process and ensure that citizens have reliable and unbiased information to make informed decisions.
In addition to its call for commitment to journalistic principles, the Media Council invited its members to renew their membership and accreditation.
By doing so, journalists can access benefits such as training and advocacy opportunities, supporting the council's mission to enhance media quality and diversity.
