Media Club to Mentor Journalism Students at Livingstonia University
The initiative between the university and media club signifies a step towards equipping future journalists with practical skills and industry exposure for success in the competitive journalism field.
MZUZU, Malawi— Journalism and development communication students at the University of Livingstonia's Kaning'ina Campus are poised to benefit from initiatives by the Nyika Media Club aimed at enhancing their journalistic skills and professional development, writes Naomi Mseteka.
"This partnership with the University of Livingstonia aligns with our mission to mentor and shape aspiring journalists for the demanding field of journalism. Our club boasts experienced journalists who are eager to guide the next generation," said Feston Malekezo, chairman of the Nyika Media Club.
The club's constitution mandates engaging with student journalists, prompting the strategic decision to partner with the university that hosts journalism and development communication degree programs.
Munyanga Ziba, head of the journalism and communication department, underscored the potential impact on student performance and the university's prestige.
"The support from Nyika Media Club will undoubtedly contribute to the success of our journalism students, thereby elevating the reputation of our university," Ziba said.
Fourth-year student Enala Mnyenyembe expressed enthusiasm, citing networking benefits with established journalists to facilitate publishing student work — a key challenge in meeting portfolio requirements.
"As students progress into their third year, they are tasked with building portfolios of published news stories. Nyika Media Club's involvement will streamline this process by facilitating interactions with journalists from various media outlets," Mnyenyembe explained.
