Media Club Chair Urges Livingstonia Students to Join
Fourth-year journalism student Chisomo Sumani said she is motivated to join after the club visit.
MZUZU, Malawi— Nyika Media Club Chairperson Feston Malekezo has encouraged students at the University of Livingstonia to join the club to gain practical experience before entering the media industry, writes Blessings Kaunda.
"It is good for you students to tap knowledge from these journalists by joining the media club. It is to your advantage if you can start working together with the experienced," Malekezo said Friday during an interface meeting with students at Kaning'ina campus.
Malekezo said associating with working journalists is necessary for students to build their careers, citing his own experience a decade ago when he learned from club members.
"10 years ago I was also a student like you and I learned a lot through associating myself to them. It helped me to be the person I am today. I urge you to do the same because Nyika Media Club has carried all sorts of journalists in the media houses you know," he added.
The chairperson also advised the journalism and development communication students to write articles and publish them through media platforms.
Head of Department Muyanga Ziba, who helped establish the club in 2002, expressed gratitude that its presence has motivated campus journalists.
"I was one of the journalists who started this club in early 2002 and your coming here at the campus has motivated student journalists to work harder," Ziba told the club members.
Fourth-year journalism student Chisomo Sumani said she is motivated to join after the club visit.
"Their coming is a motivation to me. I have made my mind to join the club. I am thankful that they have visited us and we have learned a lot from them," Sumani said.
"Apart from interacting with them, we have also learned that we can write stories for publication, not only for classwork, which is a bonus."
The Nyika Media Club has over 70 journalist members from the northern region.
