MEC Launches Nationwide Voter Awareness Drive Ahead of Polls
The MEC's move comes as the country gears up for the General Elections, which will encompass the presidential, parliamentary, and local government elections.
BLANTYRE, Malawi— The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is set to conduct a nationwide awareness campaign on the new electoral laws in preparation for the General Elections scheduled for September 2025, Cornelius Lupenga.
Sangwani Mwafulirwa, the Director of Media and Public Relations for MEC, disclosed on Monday that the awareness campaigns will run from April 24 to May 14, 2024, across the country.
"The electoral body is going to involve electoral stakeholders in all the councils on the new electoral laws and preparations for the Tripartite Elections due on September 16, 2025," Mwafulirwa said.
According to Mwafulirwa, invitations have been extended to District Elections Supervisory Teams (DEST), Multi-Party Liaison Committees (MPLCs) members from all registered political parties, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), faith and religious leaders, traditional leaders, and the media.
"There will be presentations on the new electoral laws, list of registration centers by wards and by the constituency, voter registration, eligibility to register, just to name a few things," he added.
The awareness campaign in Nsanje is scheduled to kick off on Thursday, April 24, 2024, at the Nsanje Secondary School hall.
