MEC Launches 2025 Elections, Urges Voter Education
The commission also unveiled the official election song, "Voti Yanga," composed by artist Piksy.
LILONGWE, Malawi— The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) launched preparations for the 2025 general elections Friday, calling on political parties and civil society organizations to educate citizens about voter registration starting in September, writes Martin Kamlaike.
MEC Chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja emphasized the importance of voter education during the launch event at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe.
"A person who will be allowed to register for elections will be that person who is a citizen of Malawi, and has been registered by the National Registration Bureau (NRB), and is 18 years old and above," Mtalimanja said, outlining eligibility requirements.
She added that non-citizens must have lived in Malawi for at least seven consecutive years, be registered with the NRB, and possess a National Identity card to be eligible.
Malawians will vote for president, members of parliament and ward councilors on Sept. 16, 2025.
Mtalimanja assured that the commission is well-prepared for both voter registration and the elections.
"MEC is aware that for elections to be free, fair and just, proper preparation is key," she said.
The commission also unveiled the official election song, "Voti Yanga," composed by artist Piksy.
NRB Principal Secretary Mphatso Sambo expressed confidence that all registered Malawians will have their National Identity cards by September, making them eligible to register as voters.
Sambo reported that over 75% of the population has been registered, including more than 100% of those 16 and older.
Patricia Kaliati, Secretary General of the United Transformation Movement party, called for vigilance in monitoring the electoral process.
"We are looking at MEC and NRB with a keen eye to monitor how they will be conducting themselves to ensure that nothing happens to undermine the democratic rights of Malawians," Kaliati said.
She urged the NRB to register all eligible citizens during its ongoing mop-up registration, citing concerns about people being turned away in Mulanje district.
Kaliati also encouraged youth, women and people with disabilities to join her party and consider running for office, stating, "UTM is ready to support them because Malawians have trust in UTM's vision."
