MEC briefs officials on new electoral laws for 2025
Kachale urged the officials to share the information with subordinates to build nationwide capacity for credible polls as Malawi marks 30 years of multi-party democracy.
BLANTYRE, Malawi - The Malawi Electoral Commission on Monday briefed district commissioners, chief executive officers and senior police officials on new electoral laws ahead of the 2025 general elections, writes Winston Mwale.
Speaking at the Sunbird Mount Soche Hotel, MEC Chairperson Justice Dr. Chifundo Kachale said the meeting aimed to foster collaboration, transparency and inclusivity in managing the polls.
"We cannot hold credible elections if the people that run the elections on the ground are not well equipped on how to undertake their roles," Kachale said.
"We need to have the information and knowledge generated at the head office defused to all stakeholders."
He highlighted the officials' statutory roles and personal liabilities in ensuring election security under the new laws.
Presentations outlined the legal reforms guiding the forthcoming elections.
Kachale urged the officials to share the information with subordinates to build nationwide capacity for credible polls as Malawi marks 30 years of multi-party democracy.
"Your input and engagements are vital as we strive to build an inclusive and representative democracy," he told the gathering, which included senior police commissioners.
MEC believes the meeting will pave way for a robust and transparent electoral environment reflecting the will of Malawians, Kachale added.
