MCP Sets August 8-10 for Elective Convention, Announces Fees
Aspiring candidates can collect application forms from MCP offices between July 1 and July 15, 2024.
LILONGWE, Malawi — The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) announced Saturday it will hold its elective convention from August 8-10, 2024, at the Bingu International Convention Center in Lilongwe, writes Martin Kamlaike.
Kezzie Msukwa, chair of the 2024 Convention Steering Committee, made the announcement during a press briefing at MCP headquarters.
"Aspiring candidates for various positions are expected to deposit a non-refundable nomination fee into the MCP account," Msukwa said, reading from a prepared statement.
The fee structure reflects the hierarchy of party positions:
- President: K5 million (endorsed incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera)
- 1st and 2nd Vice Presidents: k2.5 million each
- Secretary General: K2 million
- 1st and 2nd Secretary General: K1 million each
- Treasurer General: K2 million
- 1st and 2nd Treasurer General: K1 million each
- Directors: K500,000
- Deputy Directors: K250,000
The committee announced a 50% discount on nomination fees for women, youth, and people living with disabilities.
Msukwa called on party supporters to contribute to convention preparations, stating that the total budget would be disclosed "in the near future."
