LILONGWE, Malawi— The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has elected new leadership at its convention, with Catherine Gotani Hara, Speaker of the National Assembly, securing the position of First Vice President and Richard Chimwendo Banda becoming the new Secretary General, writes Martin Kamlaike.
Hara expressed gratitude for her election, saying, "First, I would like to thank God. It can only be God because it was not easy, it was tough. I would like to thank the president for his support and all the Malawi Congress Party delegates for the support and confidence they have shown in me."
The newly-elected First Vice President emphasized her readiness to prepare for the 2025 general elections, which she predicted would be a "big win."
Chimwendo Banda, the new Secretary General, pledged to invigorate the party.
"I would like to ask everyone who competed, not only for this position but any other position, come let's work together. Let's make sure the party is powerful, visible, and ready to compete," he said.
Jesse Kabwila, elected as MCP's Publicity Secretary, expressed confidence in the party's prospects for the 2025 elections.
"Today it has been shown that the game has started, and I do not believe this game will last 90 minutes. Some will run away soon," Kabwila stated.
The convention, held under the theme "Rebuilding the Nation," also saw John Paul elected as Treasurer General, Jean Sendeza as Director of Women, Baba Steve Malondera as Director of Youth, and Jivason George Kadzipatike as Director of Legal Affairs.
Some delegates, speaking anonymously, praised the election process, noting that it wasn't about handouts but rather trust in leadership to guide the party to success in 2025.
