MCP Deputy Secretary-General Hara endorses Chakwera
Hara, who is also the Speaker of Parliament, spoke at the MCP's Tambala Night and Dance fundraising event on Saturday at the President Hotel in Lilongwe.
MALAWI: Malawi Congress Party deputy secretary-general Catherine Gotani Hara becomes the party's second-highest official to endorse President Lazarus Chakwera as its presidential candidate for 2025.
Hara, who is also the Speaker of Parliament, spoke at the MCP's Tambala Night and Dance fundraising event on Saturday at the President Hotel in Lilongwe.
Many people were surprised a few months ago when party Deputy President Harry Mkandawire made a similar endorsement in Mzuzu - the pronouncement drew criticism from other quarters.
The endorsements come as the MCP-UTM agreement reached prior to the 2020 presidential election and sanctioned by the High Court remains in effect.
Catherine Gotani Hara stated: "Nobody will undo what we have bind here today. President Lazarus Chakwera is our presidential candidate for 2025."
Parties are strategizing for the 2025 elections, complete with intraparty and partnership squabbles.
Some members of the former ruling DPP have also hinted at supporting the party's president, Peter Mutharika, as a presidential candidate in 2025.
