MCP Announces National Convention for 2024, Endorses Chakwera for Presidential Race
During a press conference at MCP National Headquarters in Lilongwe on July 31, 2023, Secretary General Eisenhower Mkaka confirmed the decision.
LILONGWE, MALAWI — The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has declared that it will hold its National Convention in August 2024, with the endorsement of President Lazarus Chakwera as the party's torchbearer for the 2025 presidential polls, writes Esther Banda.
During a press conference at MCP National Headquarters in Lilongwe on July 31, 2023, Secretary General Eisenhower Mkaka confirmed the decision.
Mkaka stated, "The announcement has come after conducting a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting with its party officials, which was resolved on November 21, 2022. The exact date of the convention will be announced."
While endorsing President Chakwera for the 2025 elections, Mkaka made it clear that the party does not prohibit others from contesting the convention.
"If anyone believes they can challenge President Chakwera, they should step forward and participate in the presidential race. However, as far as the MCP members are concerned, they have no issue with President Lazarus Chakwera leading again in August 2024," explained Mkaka.
The MCP's National Convention, scheduled for August 2024, will provide an opportunity for party members to come together and discuss policies, select party officials, and shape the party's agenda for the upcoming general elections.
This convention holds significant importance for the MCP, as it sets the stage for the party's strategies and leadership for the next five years.
With the endorsement of President Chakwera, the MCP aims to maintain continuity in leadership while allowing for democratic participation within the party.
The countdown to the convention has begun, and the MCP is gearing up to mobilise its members and supporters for this critical event in Malawi's political landscape.
