LILONGWE, Malawi - The Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) Entertainers of the Year Awards ceremony celebrated the outstanding achievements of Malawi's entertainment industry, honouring talented individuals in various categories, writes Winston Mwale.
The event, held on December 30, 2023, brought together artists, performers, and media personalities to recognize their contributions to the arts.
Among the winners were renowned poet Robert Chiwamba, who clinched the title of Poet of the Year in the male category, while Beatrice Ligomeka claimed the female Poet of the Year award.
The Radio Dramatist of the Year title went to Linda Chatha, known by her stage name 'Nanyoni.' In the male category, McBen Kochi was crowned Radio Dramatist of the Year.
The coveted Poem of the Year award was bestowed upon Darlington Salley for his exceptional work titled 'Mulandu wogwililira.'
Meanwhile, the Radio Programme of the Year accolade was granted to the popular show 'Pamajiga.'
In the realm of television, Ruth Simika, known as 'Make Sikono,' was honored as the Best Female TV Dramatist of the Year, while the TV Drama Programme of the Year award went to 'Tonde Wadula.'
Enifa Chiwaya and Che Mandota were recognized as the Best Female and Male Stage Dramatists of the Year, respectively.
The esteemed Kwathu Drama Group was named the Best Stage Drama Group of the Year.
The talented actor Akira received the Actor of the Year award, while Flora Suya was honored with the Actress of the Year title. The movie 'Kado' was crowned the Movie/Film of the Year.
In the realm of sports, Patrick Mwaungulu was named Footballer of the Year, with FCB Nyasa Big Bullets taking home the title of Football Team of the Year.
Mwawi Kumwenda was recognized as the Netballer of the Year, and the MUBAS Queens were named the Netball Team of the Year.
Chikondi Phinda and Kizito Kachapila were celebrated as the Radio Personalities of the Year in the female and male categories, respectively.
The Radio Programme of the Year award was presented to 'Bwande,' while Joy Nathu was crowned DJ of the Year.
Doreen Banda and Brian Banda both received the prestigious TV Personality of the Year title. In the gospel music category, Miracle Chinga was named the Female Gospel Artist of the Year, while Steve Muliya claimed the Male Gospel Artist of the Year award.
The Ndirande Anglican Voices were celebrated as the Gospel Band/Group of the Year, while Mibawa Band won the Secular Band of the Year accolade.
The captivating gospel song 'Alibe vumbulutso' by Glora Kapindu Manong'a won the Gospel Song of the Year award, while 'Kusangalala' by Zeze Kingston was named the Song of the Year.
The music video for 'Kambuzi Kali Mkhonde' by Afana A Bangwe was recognized as the Best Music Video, and Pop Young was honored as the Best Upcoming Artist.
Pearson Chunga, the Director General of MBC, received the MBC DG Award for his remarkable leadership, while the programme 'Ankhoswe' led by Agllyna Kumilonde received the Programme wins MBC DG Awards.
The highest honor of the night, the 2023 Entertainer of Entertainers, was bestowed upon the talented Akira for his outstanding contributions to the entertainment industry.
Additionally, Innocent Kumchedwa was recognized as the Best Social Media Entertainer.
