Malawi-Maziko Private Primary School in Mchinji has pledged to offer extra-curricular activities to learners at the school to promote sporting activities in the country. This move comes after the Ministry of Education directed all schools to set aside a sports day once a week or once per term, writes Andre Rico Harare.
On Saturday, March 4, 2023, learners from Maziko Private Primary School organized a sports day where they played against Pop’s Private Primary School in various sporting activities such as football, netball, relay races, quizzes, long jumps, and debates.
Maziko Private Primary School Director, Albert Chitsonga, said that the school thought it was wise to give their learners a chance to socially interact with their fellows from Pops Private Primary School.
He vowed to continue organizing such activities in the future and urged directors from other schools to introduce school sports activities as it helps learners to share experiences.
Maziko Primary School Standard 6 learner, Lawrence Ziba, who participated in the quiz, said that the experience he got will sharpen his ambition by putting extra gear in his studies and always being inquisitive to explore new things outside education.
At the end of the competition, Maziko Private Primary School was declared the overall winner after dominating the whole competition and winning in several categories like netball (13 baskets to 6), a quiz with 31-14 points, and debate. However, the host school won in the football category by 2 goals to 1.
The sports day provided an opportunity for learners to showcase their talents, interact socially, and learn from their experiences.
The initiative by Maziko Private Primary School is commendable and will help promote sporting activities in the country.
