DEDZA, Malawi — In a thrilling encounter that marked the climax of the Central Region Football Association's (CRFA) Chipiku Premier Division round 1, Mangoni Warriors delivered a stunning performance as they handed the league leaders, Kawinga FC, their first defeat of the 2023–24 season, writes Alinafe Nyanda.

The match unfolded at Dedza Stadium and kept fans on the edge of their seats throughout.
Mangoni Warriors seized control of the game early on, with two first-half goals that set the tone for their remarkable victory.
Joseph Mtiki opened the scoring with a well-executed penalty in the 35th minute, providing the Warriors with a much-needed lead.
Not long after, Wathu Mkulichi extended their advantage, finding the net from a direct free-kick.
Kawinga FC managed to pull one back before the break, as Raheem Mtondela capitalized on an assist from Arnold Kiyama to score in the 17th minute.
However, despite their continued dominance in possession during the second half, Kawinga struggled to convert their opportunities into goals.
The resilient Mangoni Warriors defense held firm, thwarting Kawinga's attempts time and again.
The match concluded with a 2-1 scoreline in favour of Mangoni, marking their first victory in the league after previously settling for draws in three consecutive games.
Following this impressive win, Mangoni Warriors have climbed to the 9th position on the league table, securing three points in their campaign to secure promotion to the elite league.
Joe Mwase, the team leader for Atom Consult, the firm overseeing the affairs of Kawinga FC, acknowledged the fierce competition in the race for promotion to the elite league.
He emphasised the team's determination to achieve their goal of securing promotion and assured fans that Kawinga FC would intensify their efforts in the remaining games.
"As a team, we have a clear goal and a vision, and we are confident that we will accomplish our mission of earning a promotion. To our loyal supporters, I can assure you that Kawinga FC will step up our game in all the upcoming matches," Mwase affirmed.
In other fixtures of the day, Gabriel Zitha played to a 2-2 draw against Silver Strikers Reserve, Airborne Rangers outsmarted Kamuzu Barracks Reserve with a 2-0 victory, and Mbadzi United emerged victorious over Leyman Panthers with a final score of 3-2.
