MANEPO Launches Project to Improve Healthcare for Older People in Malawi
Malawi Network of Older Person Organization (MANEPO) launches a 4-year project to strengthen healthcare services for older people in Balaka, Zomba, and Machinga districts.
BALAKA, MALAWI — The Malawi Network of Older Persons Organisation (MANEPO) has launched a 4-year project worth K500 million, funded by the German Government, to improve healthcare services for older people in Balaka, Zomba, and Machinga districts, writes Peter Davieson.
The project aims to strengthen the government healthcare system and build the capacity of health workers to provide age-appropriate care for older people.
According to Andrew Kavala, the Country Director for MANEPO, 40% of deaths in Malawi are attributed to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), with older people being the most affected.
The project will focus on screening and ensuring timely healthcare for older people.
"This is a direct response to the gaps that we have noted, and we want to strengthen the systems and provide training to clinical officers, nurses, and health surveillance assistants (HSAs) so that they can deliver the treatment needed for older people," said Kavala.
Dr. Jones Chise, the Director of Health and Social Services at Machinga District Council, highlighted the importance of addressing chronic conditions among older people and ensuring they receive prompt treatment.
The council plans to establish special dates and clinics to cater specifically to older people. Chise emphasised the need to strengthen the healthcare system by focusing on human resources, health information, and supply chain management.
Denister Makunganya, the Vice Chair for Machinga District Council, emphasised the importance of not only providing medication but also addressing the basic needs of older people, such as food and clothing.
Makunganya urged hospital officials to visit older people in their communities, as many may struggle to travel long distances to access healthcare.
He also called on MANEPO and other well-wishers to consider supporting older people with basic needs.
The project launched by MANEPO aims to improve the lives of older people in Balaka, Zomba, and Machinga districts by enhancing healthcare services, knowledge within the community, drug availability, and infrastructure.
The project also seeks to influence national policies to further improve services for the elderly.
