Man Arrested in Nsanje for Forgery, Use of Counterfeit Bank Notes
A 48-year-old resident of Nthukuso village in the area of Senior Chief Malemia in Nsanje has been apprehended on suspicion of forgery and the use of forged bank notes, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
NSANJE, Malawi - A 48-year-old resident of Nthukuso village in the area of Senior Chief Malemia in Nsanje has been apprehended on suspicion of forgery and the use of forged bank notes, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Sub-Inspector Agnes Zalakoma, the Public Relations Officer of the Nsanje Police Station, confirmed the arrest of Charles Kuleti.
The alleged crime took place on Thursday, May 19, 2023, at the Nsanje Trading Centre.
According to Sub-Inspector Zalakoma, law enforcement authorities received information regarding the suspect's involvement in Airtel Money transactions using counterfeit banknotes at an agent.
Acting swiftly upon receiving the tip-off, the police arrested Kuleti. During the arrest, Kuleti was found to possess K5000:00 in forged banknotes, amounting to K250,000:00.
"After receiving the report, the police moved in swiftly and apprehended the suspect, who was found with K5000:00 in counterfeit banknotes, totalling K250,000:00," stated Sub-Inspector Zalakoma.
Furthermore, Sub-Inspector Zalakoma revealed that following Kuleti's arrest, he provided information leading the police to his alleged accomplice, who was suspected of supplying him with counterfeit banknotes. However, the accomplice was not found at the location.
"In collaboration with the suspect, the police conducted a search of the alleged accomplice's residence, where they discovered K2,000.00 notes amounting to K888,000.00, as well as K5,000.00, notes amounting to K921,000.00. Additionally, they found forged MSCE certificates and a printing machine used for producing the counterfeit cash. These items have been seized as evidence," Sub-Inspector Zalakoma added.
The suspect has now been formally charged with forgery, while the investigation into the identification and apprehension of his alleged accomplice remains ongoing.
As news of the arrest spread, the wife of the suspect's accomplice managed to evade capture and is currently at an undisclosed location.
The Nsanje Police Station urges anyone with further information regarding this case or any related criminal activities to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation.
Charles Kuleti is scheduled to appear in court soon, and law enforcement agencies remain determined to bring all individuals involved in this forgery operation to justice.
