The evangelism campaign, known as "Chiwembe for Blantyre," spanned two weeks and featured guest preacher Dr. Pastor Daniel Chungu from the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Zambia.
Blantyre, Malawi - President Lazarus Chakwera has acknowledged the significant contributions of the Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA) in advancing the developmental aspirations of Malawi, writes Benson Kamonjola.
Speaking during a prayer event organized by the church, which marked the celebration of the church's 100 years of existence in Blantyre since its first establishment at Chiwembe in 1923, President Chakwera lauded the SDA's role in key sectors such as health and education.
"It is an undeniable fact that the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Malawi has contributed a lot to the country through education and health, something that is commendable," President Chakwera noted.
"But I also urge you to join the elected positions and the civil service, as we are all waiting for the second coming of our Lord Jesus," he added.
He has, however, appealed to the church to invest more in other sectors like agriculture and the arts, as they are also key pillars of the Malawi2063 agenda.
Meanwhile, the president of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Malawi, Pastor Tony Nyirenda, expressed the church's commitment to collaborating with the government in various sectors for the advancement of the country's development.
"On behalf of the Church, let me also appreciate the humanitarian support that you, Mr. President, offered to the people of Blantyre and SDA members, inclusive, when the country was hit by Cyclone Freddy," Pastor Tony Nyirenda said.
The evangelism campaign, known as "Chiwembe for Blantyre," spanned two weeks and featured guest preacher Dr. Pastor Daniel Chungu from the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Zambia.
As a gesture of support, President Chakwera announced a donation of 5 million Kwacha to the SDA, with K2 million expected to be allocated to the construction project of the Chiwembe SDA church, the first church of its kind in Blantyre.
