Malawi's 'Mayor of Music' Zeze Kingston Withdraws from Award Races
LILONGWE, Malawi — Zeze Kingston, one of Malawi's most prominent musicians, announced Wednesday his decision to step aside from future music award nominations, citing a desire to create opportunities for other local artists, writes Wyness Michelle Msukwa AfricaBrief Entertainment Reporter.
In a press statement issued Wednesday, Kingston, who calls himself the "Mayor of Malawi" in music circles, expressed gratitude for his career growth since his pivotal performance at the Maso Awards in November 2022.
"The last 22 months have been truly incredible for my music career," Kingston said.
"I've been privileged to perform at multiple local and international gigs, expanding my reach and influence."
Kingston pledged to continue producing "exceptional music that inspires and uplifts our nation," despite withdrawing from award considerations.
He also revealed he is currently working on a new album titled "SPIRITUAL."
"This new project is driven by my passion for music and dedication to my people," the artist explained.
Kingston used the statement to advocate for extending award nominations to other talented Malawian artists, underscoring his commitment to fostering growth in the local music industry.
The musician thanked God, his wife, family, and fans for their support. His statement included logos of associated brands or sponsors, including Serato Media, indicating his continued commercial partnerships.
