Malawi's Blue Eagles to Make Historic Debut at World Winners Beach Soccer Cup
Malawi Police Service prepares for international debut in Italian championship
Alghero, Italy - In a historic move, the Malawi Police Service (MPS) has confirmed its participation in the prestigious World Winners Championship Beach Soccer Cup in Alghero, Italy, scheduled to be held from September 26 to October 1, 2023, writes Alinafe Nyanda.
This marks the first time that the Malawian team, Blue Eagles, will be competing on the international stage in beach soccer.
Audloy Makonyola, the MPS national sports coordinator, confirmed this exciting development, emphasising the significance of the event for both the team and the nation.
Makonyola said, "We are geared and set to take part in the competition for the first time, but we are appealing for support ahead of our departure. Blue Eagles will represent Malawi as a country, and we are hopeful that well-wishers will come in large numbers to support us."
The team is actively seeking support to cover the expenses associated with the tournament, which include airfare for the players and officials.
Makonyola explained, "We need to have a group of between 14-16 people, you know, beach soccer involves five players and other substitutes. The total number of players we wish to take on board is almost 16, with some officials."
He further disclosed that some well-wishers have already stepped up to support the team, contributing to the MK31 million needed for the trip.
"As of now, other well-wishers have already started supporting the team with some items like air tickets. In total, we have managed to secure six air tickets for six players," he added.
Makonyola highlighted the importance of the opportunity for Malawian players, stating, "We are excited that our players will now be able to get the much-needed international exposure, which will help develop the sport in the country."
The World Winners Championship Beach Soccer Cup has attracted clubs from North, Central, and South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.
After last year's tournament in Cagliari, where German team Real Münster (men) and Polish team Lady Grembach (women) claimed victory, this year's event will take place in Alghero, with the new champions set to be determined on October 1, 2023.
Malawi's Blue Eagles are set to make their mark on the global stage, representing their nation with pride as they compete against teams from around the world in the thrilling sport of beach soccer.
