Malawian Property Management Company “Fred and Ted” Thrives Amidst Increasing Competition
Fred and Ted employ 15 people and have offices in Lilongwe, Blantyre, and Mzuzu, as well as agents in Salima, Zomba, and Kasungu.
LILONGWE, Malawi - Since the advent of multi-party politics, Malawi has seen a surge in the number of companies and individuals dealing in properties. However, many have folded or left along the way due to various reasons, writes Christopher Jimu.
Amidst this fluctuating landscape, one company, owned by a Malawian, has not only withstood the test of time but is also expanding at an impressive pace.
Fred and Ted, situated in Old Wenela Buildings in Lilongwe, is making a significant impact by managing properties, renting properties, and auctioneering.
The company was established in 2008 by Fred Kapito, a Business Administration graduate from MUBAS, initially Polytechnic.
“There were a few estate agents during the one-party state, but after multi-partism, the number increased. I was not fazed because I knew I could make a difference,” says Kapito.
He started his journey with Ching’onga Estate Agents, where he worked for six months before starting his own venture.
Kapito, who initially thought of making his name in the medical industry, resigned from MACRO in 2016 to concentrate on his real estate business.
“Since then, I cannot complain. Business has been good, and the Lord has been merciful to us,” contends Kapito.
As a testament to the growing business, Kapito has 200 clients under property management, 16 in auctioneering, 300 in property sales, and over 500 in property renting.
“Despite having many clients, we manage them very well because our staff is very professional, dedicated, and experienced. This gives us an edge over our competitors,” Kapito enthuses.
He urged other property owners contemplating finding a manager to try Fred and Ted because of the integrity and honesty of the staff, as well as their wealth of experience.
“When you see a property under Fred and Ted, you are sure that the property is real and available,” promises Kapito.
Kapito also commended the government for providing a conducive environment for property management companies, saying they are always involved in policy formulation.
“We cannot ask for more from the government. We are partners in development, and as long as we have one goal, we will scale dizzy heights, and the sky will be the limit,” he adds.
