Malawian Farm Exports Bellpeppers to South Africa
GGL is optimistic it can explore markets in other countries like Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique and Zambia.
LILONGWE, Malawi- Greenbelt Greenhouse Limited (GGL), a subsidiary of Malawi's Greenbelt Authority, exported about 3 tonnes of bellpeppers to South Africa on Thursday, according to GGL marketing officer Tamandani Chanza, writes Benson Kamonjola.
"We are happy that we as a Malawian company are now managing to penetrate into the international market something we believe is going to contribute positively to our economy," Chanza said.
The exportation of farm produce from Malawi to South Africa began in November and marks a "greater milestone in boosting the country's economy by bringing the much needed forex," Chanza said.
GGL is optimistic it can explore markets in other countries like Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique and Zambia.
GGL has managed to export about 70 tonnes of produce since November, generating approximately $65,000, according to Chanza.
Mesiah Moleni, director of farming at Greenbelt Authority, said the government is pleased Malawian companies have started penetrating international markets, which will benefit the country economically.
Moleni said the government, through Greenbelt Authority, plans to train small-scale farmers on modern farming methods so they can produce higher quality crops.
"We are happy as government that the issue of mega farms in the country has now started bearing fruits. We are optimistic that many local producers will also find the same opportunity," Moleni said.
