Malawian Cyclists Head to South Africa for Cape Tour
The cyclists completed a seven-day training camp from Feb. 26 to March 4 before their departure.
LILONGWE, Malawi — Four Malawian cyclists left the country Wednesday through Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe to participate in the Cape Cycle Tour scheduled for March 9 in Cape Town, South Africa, writes Happy Valirani.
The team includes MacPherson Mbeya and Antonio Banda from Mzuzu Cycling Club, Yusuf Major from Lilongwe Cycling Club, and Gift Nazombe from Blantyre Cycling Club. Mbeya will lead the team.
"Our boys have left the country on Wednesday for South Africa for a one-day ride tour in Cape Town," said Elton Chipeta, treasurer and events organizer for the Cycling Federation of Malawi.
"The tour attracts several participants across the world."
The cyclists completed a seven-day training camp from Feb. 26 to March 4 before their departure.
According to Chipeta, the trip is sponsored by Neil Bilsland, a Scottish cycling partner who owns Billy Bilsland Cycles in Glasgow.
"Our cycling partner, Neil Bilsland, has sponsored the trip," Chipeta said. "He has sponsored our four cyclists with the flight tickets, accommodations, and food during their stay in South Africa."
Chipeta acknowledged support from both the Malawi Olympics Committee and Malawi National Sports Council during the team's preparation.
The Cape Cycle Tour is an annual event that attracts international participation. For some Malawian cyclists, this marks their first time competing in this prestigious cycling event.
