Harare, Zimbabwe-Joseph Mwale, the 2023 Malawi national chess champion, finished in sixth place at the Minerva Open Chess tournament in Zimbabwe, writes Happy Valirani.
Mwale, who is a FIDE Master, scored 7 points out of 9 rounds, finishing just behind the top five players, who all had 7.5 points.
"I am very happy with my performance," Mwale said.
"I knew it would be a tough tournament, but I was determined to do my best. I am proud of myself for finishing in the top six."
Mwale's performance was a major breakthrough for Malawian chess. He is the first Malawian player to finish in the top six of an international chess tournament.
"This is a great achievement for Joseph and for Malawian chess," said Francisco Mwangupili, the spokesperson for the Chess Association of Malawi.
"Joseph has shown that Malawian chess players can compete at the highest level. We are very proud of him."
Mwale's performance was also a major boost for the Chess Association of Malawi. The association has been working hard to promote chess in Malawi, and Mwale's success will help to raise the profile of the game in the country.
"Joseph's performance is a great inspiration for young chess players in Malawi," said Mwangupili.
"It shows them that they can achieve anything if they work hard and believe in themselves."
Mwale is now looking forward to competing in more international tournaments. He is hoping to qualify for the World Chess Championship in 2025.
"I am very excited about the future of Malawian chess," said Mwale.
"I believe that we can produce more world-class chess players in the years to come."
