Malawi Water Minister Commissions Boreholes to Improve Rural Access
The new boreholes are expected to significantly improve access to safe and clean water for residents in the Chikwawa Nkombezi area.
CHIKWAWA, Malawi— Malawi's Minister of Water and Sanitation Abida Sidik Mia commissioned new boreholes Saturday in Chikwawa Nkombezi, aiming to reduce the distance communities walk for clean water, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
The ceremony took place at Paiva 2 in Senior Chief Ngabu's area of Chikwawa district.
Mia, also the Member of Parliament for Nkombezi Constituency, expressed satisfaction that water scarcity would no longer be a problem in the area.
"I'm grateful for the gesture by the Malawi Relief Fund UK in the constituency," Mia said.
Aishah Missi, Administration Officer for MRF UK, said the organization drilled the boreholes after being approached by the local parliamentarian.
Missi urged communities to maintain the boreholes. "Let's ensure our children are not playing on the boreholes, which may lead to their destruction," she warned.
Group Village Headman Paiva, speaking on behalf of local residents, expressed excitement about the new water source in his village.
"Water was a major challenge for people in my village and surrounding areas," the traditional leader said. "The water from these boreholes is fresh and free from salt."
The new boreholes are expected to significantly improve access to safe and clean water for residents in the Chikwawa Nkombezi area.
