Malawi VP Urges MPs to Fully Utilize Constituency Development Funds
Usi's visit underscores the government's push for greater accountability and efficiency in the use of development funds at the local level.
THYOLO, Malawi— Malawi's Vice President Michael Usi has called on members of parliament in Thyolo District to make better use of Constituency Development Funds (CDF), emphasizing that the money is intended to benefit rural communities, writes Yamikani Yapuwa, MANA.
During a surprise visit to Thyolo District Council on Monday, Usi expressed concern over reports that some MPs are not properly utilizing the funds.
"CDF is not being used properly because according to the District Commissioner, some MPs do not use this money, claiming to be too busy," Usi said.
"This is worrying because the money is meant to benefit people in the villages and the country at large."
Usi directed the Thyolo District Commissioner to engage with MPs who are not effectively using the funds.
He stressed that MPs serve as a crucial link between the government and rural communities, and their failure to spend allocated funds adversely affects development.
The vice president also criticized poor office management practices, citing inadequate planning and reporting as significant issues.
Hudson Kuphanga, District Commissioner for Thyolo, welcomed Usi's visit and pledged to continue driving development in the district.
He highlighted recent successes, including the completion of 10 projects under the GESD program.
Usi's visit underscores the government's push for greater accountability and efficiency in the use of development funds at the local level.
